You’ve got to hand it to Marie Kondo for the phrase: “Does this spark joy?” Her organizational skills are powered by eros itself: The Power of Joy.
There are lots of professional organizers out there. “Unstuff your life” among many others signal our desire to see clearly what we want to be in contact with, surrounding our lives. “More Love, Less stuff” is another modality, proffered by our friend Andrew Mellen.
With this in mind, proceed: Go into your files of artwork from the past and do the “Spark Joy” test. But, don’t toss it out. See if cutting away the “bad parts” will improve the image. Then pile up the pieces, and begin sorting. This sorting process is the essential move to find a core of “Joy”.
DNT is the watchword: DO THE NEXT THING. With all this “information” around see if the pieces relate. The prime directive here is: Don’t think too much. If you are moved to: edit by cutting, edit by adding, edit by penciling, painting, etc. do it. Do the next will put you in contact with your own essential nature. A kind of free association. In this exercise it’s associating things from the past into the present. That Carla Bley piece is a good sound track for this movement.
And, most of all have fun, sparking joy with what you’ve made.
